How to Evaluate a Trading Platform: A 12-Point Independent Checklist

The structured checklist our editorial team uses when researching any trading platform, including Global Reserve — regulation, costs, execution, risk controls and documentation.

Analytical world map used for independent trading platform evaluation

This is the checklist we apply to every platform we study. It is deliberately boring. It contains no scoring gimmicks, no affiliate-friendly categories and no attempt to declare a winner. It is a sequence of verifiable questions, and it works equally well for Global Reserve or any other name that appears in search results.

1–3: Identity and accountability

  • Which legal entity operates the platform, and in which jurisdiction is it incorporated?
  • Which regulator, if any, supervises that entity, and can the licence number be verified on the regulator's own register?
  • Is there a published complaints procedure with defined timelines and an external escalation route?

Verification means checking the regulator's register directly, not accepting a badge image on a marketing page. Registers are public and searchable. This step takes four minutes and eliminates a surprising proportion of candidates.

4–6: The true cost of trading

  • Is the full fee schedule published — spreads, commissions, financing, conversion and inactivity charges?
  • Are typical spreads stated as averages over a defined period, or only as 'from' figures?
  • What are the deposit, withdrawal and currency-conversion costs, and how long do withdrawals take?

Cost transparency is the least glamorous and most predictive evaluation criterion.

7–9: Execution and risk architecture

  • Does the order execution policy state the execution model and any conflicts of interest?
  • Are margin close-out thresholds, position-closing order and gap handling documented numerically?
  • Which order types are natively supported, and are guaranteed stops available?

These three questions separate platforms that have thought carefully about adverse scenarios from those that have only designed for good days. Our detailed notes on Global Reserve apply exactly these criteria and record where documentation is specific and where it is general.

10–12: Practical usability

  • Is there a demo environment with realistic data and no time limit that forces a decision?
  • Is support reachable by more than one channel, with published hours and response expectations?
  • Is the educational material genuinely instructional, or is it promotional content in an educational format?

How to weight the answers

Not every criterion deserves equal weight. In our methodology, regulatory verifiability and cost transparency carry the most weight, because they are objective and consequential. Interface aesthetics carry the least, because preferences differ and habits adapt. A platform with an unremarkable interface and impeccable documentation is a better research subject than the reverse.

Comparing two platforms fairly

When comparing, hold the instrument and position size constant. Compare the total round-trip cost of the same hypothetical trade rather than headline spreads. Compare the documented margin close-out level rather than the advertised maximum leverage. Comparisons made on marketing language are meaningless; comparisons made on identical scenarios are informative.

Finally, record your findings with dates. Platforms change their terms, and a conclusion reached eighteen months ago may no longer describe the current product. Every research note we publish carries a review date for this reason.

What the checklist deliberately excludes

It excludes profitability claims, because no platform determines whether a trader is profitable. It excludes user-review aggregate scores, because they are trivially manipulated. It excludes rankings, because ranking implies a recommendation and we do not make recommendations.
